Cigars wrap up the regular season; Will play first round playoff series vs. the Dodgers

The Cigars wrapped up the regular season with a 16-5 win over the Royals. Tom Dicesare hit two home runs and Steven Matthews added another. The Cigars finished the regular season 10-7-1 and in first place in the American League East. The Cigars open a 3 game series with the Dodgers in the first round of the Atlanta MSBL playoffs.

Cigars get back on track with win over the Braves

The month of June was not a good one for the Cigars. The Stogies lost 4 of 5 in June including losses to the Spikes, Dodgers, and Barracudas. The Cigars did win one in June against the Royals. Thankfully June is past and the Cigars got off to a good start in July with a 9-4 win over the Braves. The Cigars are now 9-4-1 and in first place in the American League East of the Atlanta MSBL.

Cigars take down Dodgers and Red Sox

The Cigars beat the Dodgers 8-7. Tom Hart and Eric Johnson led the offense - each with two hits and an RBI. The Cigars went to 5-0-1 on the season after beating the Red Sox 11-7. Alfredo Medina and Mike Whitney both went deep.

Cigars beat Cubs; Tie Crows

The Cigars beat the Cubs 20-12. Michael Whitney had two homers and Sean Turnan added three hits. In a makeup game, the Cigars tied the Crows 8-8. The Cigars had a two run lead going into the ninth, but could not hold it as time expired after nine.

Cigars cruise past Braves

The Cigars beat the Brave 17-1 to go 2-0 on the season. Mike Whitney was three for four with a double and a homer. Will Eustace had two hits including a triple. Sean Turnan pitched four scoreless innings and Aaron Fell contributed two scoreless innings in his MSBL debut.

Cigars come back to beat Brewers

After trailing 7-1 early, the Cigars came back to beat the Brewers 15-9. New Cigar Mike Whitney had two doubles and three RBIs and also pitched three scoreless innings. New Cigars Jake Morgan and Blake Bailey also contributed with big hits.

Cigars welcome new players for opening day take two

We still need to add a few players and particularly could use some help on the mound and in the outfield. If you are 24 years or older, have HS, college or pro experience and are interested in joining the Cigars, please email cigarsbaseball@gmail.com

The season starts at the end of March and goes through the summer. We play 18 regular season games plus playoffs, and games are mostly all on Sundays.

Cigars lose to the Rays 19-15

The Cigars lost to the Rays for the second time this season. The loss puts the Cigars only 1 game ahead of the Rays for the 2 seed in the American league East division playoffs as we head into the final weekend of the regular season. The loss followed a forfeit win against the Indians. This weekend the Cigars play two games against the first place Angels and then follow up with a single game against the Brewers.

Despite only fielding 8 players, the Cigars defeated the Royasl 20-7. The Cigars were lead by strong pitching from Sean Turnan and 3 home runs from Salamon Salzmon, Eric Johnson, and Edwin Marcial. The Cigars have 2 games this weekend as they face the Indians and Rays.

Cigars defeat the Barracudas

After a loss to the Astros, the Cigars bounced back this week with a win over the Barracudas 13-3. Sean Turnan got the win in a rain shortened 5 inning game. Next up the Cigars take on the Angels in a battle for first place in the division.

After back to back losses to the Pirates and Red Sox, the Cigars got back on track with a 10-2 win over the Royals. Sean Turnan had 9 Ks and held the Royals to just 2 runs over 7 innings. Steven Matthews and Edwin Marcial each had 2 hits including a homer and a double.

The Cigars beat the Braves 18-0. Sean Turnan held the Braves to just 2 hits over 7 innings. Lanny Lautenschlager and Alfredo Medina each had 3 hits to lead the Cigars offense. Next up the Cigars take on the Pirates. The Cigars have not played the Pirates since losing to them in the division series championship 2 years ago.

Cigars come back to defeat the Cubs

Down 5 late in the game, the Cigars rallied to beat the Cubs 9-7. Leo Blair hit a grand slam in the top of the 7th to tie the game at 6 all. Lanny Lautenschlager hit a solo shot in the 8th to give the Cigars a one run lead. Steven Matthews had 3 hits while Eric Johnson and Lanny combined to hold the Cubs to just 7 runs over nine innings.

Cigars rained out again; John Struble gets knee surgery

The Cigars were rained out again for the third time this season. It's been a rainy spring in Atlanta and between rain and holidays we've only managed 3 games thus far. Its going to be a busy second half of the season. We'll be off for the Memorial Day weekend and back in action against the Cubs in two weeks.

In other news, Cigars infielder John Struble (right) got knee surgery on Monday and will be out 4-6 weeks. We all wish John a speedy recovery so he can get back on the field soon.

Cigars rained out against the Angels

This past Sunday's game vs. the Angels was rained out. The Cigars are 2-1 and in 2nd place in the MSBL American League East division.

Cigars beat Brewers on walk off homer

Despite leading 16-6 at one point, the Cigars needed a walk off 3 run home run by Tom Hart to beat the Brewers 19-17. The Cigars offense was led by Steven Mathews who was four for four including a 3 run homer, and Al Medina who was 3 for 3 with a triple, double and single and had 4 RBIs.

Cigars beat the Barracudas

The Cigars clobbered out 18 hits including 4 dingers to beat the Cudas 21-8. Alfredo Medina hit a grand slam and Sean Turnan, Steven Mathews and Tom Dicesare also went deep. Sean Turnan pitched 6 strong innings to earn the win. The Cigars are now 1-1 on the season.

Cigars drop opener to Rays

The Cigars lost the 2009 opener to the Rays 9-8. The Cigars started strong with a 2 run homer in the first from catcher Tom Dicesare. Eric Johnson pitched 4 strong innings as the Cigars took a 7-2 lead into the 5th inning but could not hold on. The Rays won the game with a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth.

The Cigars won the American League East in 2008 with a combined record of 15-9-1 in the regular season and playoffs. The Cigars made it to the American League finals after defeating the Dodgers and very tough Brewers in the first two rounds. The Cigars took the first game of the best of 3 finals series against the Prowlers but then could not hold on as the Prowlers took the last 2 games to win the league championship.

The Cigars return to Riverwood HS for the 2009 season. We are looking for a few players to join us. If you are interested in playing for the Cigars, please contact Edwin Marcial at edwin_ma@yahoo.com.

Cigars beat Prowlers; bounce back after loss to Ninjas

Eric Johnson, Jon Lambert, Holt Carter, and Joe Barbao combined to hold the Prowlers to just 3 runs over nine innings as the Cigars bounced back to beat the Prowlers 7-3. The Cigars are now 2-1 on the season.

The Cigars beat the Chico's 12-3. Sean Turnan and Eric Johnson combined to hold the Chico's to 3 runs over 8 innings. The Cigars offense was led by Sean's 4 hits and Steven Matthews 3 hits including a 2 run double.

The Cigars finished up the 2007 season 14 and 8 making it to the semi-finals of the playoffs where they lost a best of 3 series to the eventual league champions the Pirates. Several Cigars had outstanding seasons in 2007, but Lanny Lautenschlager and Sean Turnan were selected the 2007 "Premium All Star Cigars."

The Cigars now turn their attention to the 2008 season. For 2008, The Cigars have a new home field, and are excited to be playing games at Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs. Three new players join the Cigars for 2008 including pitchers Joe Barbao, Holt Carter, and first round draft choice outfielder/infielder Leonard Blair.

The Cigars open up the 2008 season against the Cubs at 4 PM Sunday at Riverwood HS.

Cigars end 2006 season

The Cigars ended the 2006 season with a record of 13-6. It was the best season yet for the Cigars franchise. For the first time in the brief 4 year history of the franchise, the Cigars were over .500 and made it into the second round of the playoffs.

The Cigars now turn their thoughts to 2007 and the team is looking for a few good players to add to the squad. The Cigars are particularly looking for a couple of good arms to joing their pitching staff next season. If you interested in joining the Cigars, send an email to info@cigarsbaseball.org.

Cigars drop 2 of 3 to Legends; out of the playoffs

The Cigars lost 2 of 3 games to get ousted from the playoffs. After dropping the first game, the Cigars cambe back from a 6-0 deficit to tie the series at 1-1. The Cigars had a lead late in the 3rd and deciding game but could not hold it and lost to the eventual league champion Legends. The Cigars season ended with 13 wins and 9 losses.

The Cigars defeated the Commanches 6-4 to advance to the second round of the MSBL playoffs. Sean Turnan pitched a complete 9 innings allowing only 4 runs. Led by Lanny Lautenschlager, Wind Nieddu and Alfredo Medina, the Cigars defense was fantastic making several outstanding defense plays. Clutch hitting by Tom Hart, Wind Nieddu, Jeff McMichael, Joe Malone and Tom DiGregorio drove the Cigars offense. Next the Cigars face the Legends in a best of 3 series.

Cigars split 2 with the Crackers, end regular season at 11-7

The Cigars played a two day series with the Crackers to end the 2006 MSBL regular season. In the first game on Saturday the Cigars took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the eigth despite playing much of the game with only 8 fielders. The Crackers found the wholes in the 8th and came back to beat the Cigars 5-6 in 9. Alfredo Medina had a 3 run home run and made a spectacular diving catch to turn a double play with the bases loaded. Eric Johnson pitched 7 strong innings holding the Crackers to only 2 runs.

In the second game on Sunday Sean Turnan pitched a complete game gem holding the Crackers to only 2 runs. The Cigars played great team defense and Joe Malone had a huge 2 run blast to lead the offense.

Steve Rosenburg

June 19, 2006 - It is a very sad day for Atlanta, for Georgia and the MSBL. We have lost a close friend, our founding father, and a wonderful person. This morning Steve Rosenberg passed away. Although the exact cause is not known, he essentially had complications from his cancer and lung problems.

Steve always had the best intentions of the MSBL at heart, and through his efforts it has become one of the best sports leagues in Atlanta, if not the country.

Please keep Steve, his family and friends in your prayers.

Cigars win opener 11-7

The Cigars came back from a 3 run deficit to beat the Cubs in their MSBL season opener. Sean Turnan held the Cubs in Check through 5 innings. The Cigars finally got their bats going in the 6th and scored all 11 runs in the last 3 innings. Sean Turnan had a couple of hits including a double and Lanny Lautenschlager and Jeff McMichael had big hits to lead the comeback. Walkler Rutledge had an RBI single in his first at bat as a Cigar. Eric Johnson struck out 5 in the 2 and 2/3 innings to close out the game and get the save.
